Solidarity Must Be Defended: Book Talk
Naeem Mohaiemen, Eszter Szakács
Join us for a conversation exploring how visual artists navigated gestures of transnational solidarity during the Cold War era. The anthology Solidarity Must Be Defended examines both grand initiatives and tragic misfires from an entangled, decolonizing world—tracing connections between non-alignment movements, liberation struggles, and artistic practices across borders.
Drawing from Eastern European and Global South histories, editors Naeem Mohaiemen and Eszter Szakács discuss the hope and risk of solidarity work: the dramatic protagonists, triumphant moments, and revealing failures that defined an era of revolutionary optimism. In dialogue with curator Aziz Sohail and photoKTM’s theme of Global South and Third World Solidarity, this conversation asks what these complex histories reveal about building solidarity in our present moment.
