Thuma Collective is a group of female photographers from Myanmar who are dedicated to visual storytelling. “Thuma” means “She” in the Myanmar language. The collective was initiated in 2017, with the mission of promoting the practice of visual storytelling and amplifying voices through the eyes of women, and inspiring and encouraging women who are interested in photography to use it as a language to tell stories and engage with their world. Thuma’s works have been exhibited in local and international art scenes. To name a few are their collective exhibitions; “Us & Beyond” and “Disclosure” at Myanmar Deitta gallery and Pursuing Arts in Research Festival in Yangon. Their collaborative art project “Bridging the Naf” with Bangladeshi women photographers collective “Kaali Collective” was also featured at Dhaka Art Summit 2020. Thuma has published three collective photo-books; Us & Beyond (2018), Bridging the Naf (2019) and Knots (2020). Thuma’s members are Khin Kyi Htet, Rita Khin, Shwe Wutt Hmon, Tin Htet Paing, Wai Hnin Tun and Yu Yu Myint Than.
