Alizeh Afzal
Community Reading Room - Guest Curator
Karachi
Alizeh Afzal is a book artist, arts writer and researcher based in Karachi, Pakistan. Their practice primarily involves creating zines and artist books that center queer lived experiences, friendships, intimacy, and community within the context of Pakistan. Working across experimental forms of bookbinding, photography, papermaking, printmaking, archiving, and drawing, Alizeh explores unconventional modes of storytelling and documentation. She creates small-batch, limited-edition publications that circulate within the community.
In 2023, Alizeh initiated The Blue Orange Project, a community-driven literary zine and collaborative platform that gathers stories and art emerging from within Karachi's context. The project has published thematic issues such as "All the places i go to hide" and "Food & Community", and has evolved into an offering of workshops that foster collective learning and creative exchange.
Alizeh has worked with The Citizens Archive of Pakistan, Karachi Biennale and The Noor Network. She holds an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts (honours) from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (2023). In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at Queer Unschool South Asia at Kaalo 101, Patan. She currently works as an Art Critic and Editor at Art Now Pakistan.
